I went out and purchased a new train set yesterday from my local hobby supply store. There where many choices to choose from, but I decided on the HO scale Cavalier (#01331) from Bachmann’s Spectrum line. This package was a complete set that is ready-to-run out of the box. The Cavalier set includes the trademarked E-Z line of track and an analog controller. The train is DCC ready.
As the package advertised, I had the whole train set assembled and running in about 5-10 minutes. It took me a little longer because I was railing it around the Christmas tree, which was up against the wall and full of presents. I was somewhat disappointed that the set did not come with one more stack of (4) straight rails. I know, the rails only cost about $2 each, but that’s $8 Bachmann could have sprung for, considering the set runs $180-$220 depending on where you buy it from.
The train does have the nice feature of lighted cars, which is a plus in my book. The lighting is not over-bearing so you will need the room to be somewhat darkened to see the effect clearly. The setup of this set was indeed easy. There’s not much to it.
- Step One: Take everything out of the box.
- Step Two: Snap the tracks together (real easy).
- Step Three: Put the train on the track.
- Step Four: Hook up the power and roll her out.
I was pleased to watch the Cavalier glide smoothly over the rails. I only had one hiccup that cause a slight derailment, which was my fault. The set comes with:
- 1. DCC-equipped Class J 4-8-4 locomotive with tender (Norfolk & Western #613).
- 2. Combine with interior lighting.
- 3. Coach with interior lighting.
- 4. Observation car with interior lighting.
- 5. Rails to make a 63″ x 45″ oval. The rails consist of nickel silver E-Z Tracks, including 16 pieces of 22″ radius curved track, 3 pieces straight track, and 1 plug-in terminal rerailer.
It also comes with the power pack and DVD. As mentioned, this is a complete set. The Bachmann Spectrum Cavalier set does not come with any frills like scenery, which amazed me, because I have seen $60 train sets come with at least some scenery.
I can say that I am happy with my purchase. I love the Cavalier from Bachmann. I have been running the train off and on since purchased and have not had any major issues with the operation. It appears to be a solid train. If you are looking to get into the train hobby, I would recommend this set (or any one in this line), because it has everything you need to get your feet wet. Soon you will be expanding your horizons.

Family came over for Christmas and they liked the new train. I would have liked to see silhouettes in the windows, but this is a great HO train.
