This year, the O Gauge Polar Express is one hot item. The set is retailing for around $260—if you can get it. The Polar Express sure looks spectacular and model railroaders of all ages are sure to enjoy seeing it grace the rails. The train is based of the 1985 story written by Chris Van Allsburg. The movie, 2004, was a fun time for all moviegoers. Fun aside, just what does this O gauge train set offer for model railroading fun?

For starters, this model train comes with a 2-8-4 Berkshire steam locomotive with tender. It also has to passenger coaches and one passenger observation car with rounded deck. The tender is equipped with an air whistle. As you might expect, this set comes with railroad tracks, a CW-80 transformer, some movie characters, liquid smoke and a how-to video.

The engine has a front headlight and puffs smoke. The tender has an operating coupler on the rear. The Polar Express has a die cast metal body and frame. This beautiful model train not only has lighted interiors, but also has silhouettes—a very nice touch. Individual cars for this set are also available and run around $40-$60 per car.

As mentioned, the O Gauge Polar Express model train is a tough find. Most places I checked on the Internet were sold out. One source said that Lionel was going to release another run, so if you can’t find your Polar Express, be on the lookout for this next run. Another option is Ebay. A quick search revealed some Lionel Polar Express model train sets where available at basically the retail price.
